What works as an input?

Start with an image that contains visible surface detail. The converter reads luminance changes as an approximation of height.

A generated normal map changes lighting response; it does not recover true geometry, remove baked shadows, or correct a perspective-heavy photograph. Validate the exported map in the target material and at the scale where it will be rendered.

Can I convert any image to a normal map?

Most images can produce a starting point, but the result is strongest when brightness changes correspond to real surface detail. Portraits, smooth gradients, and photographs with baked shadows may need manual cleanup.

Does the image to normal map converter upload my file?

No. The free converter decodes and processes the image in the current browser tab. The normal map generation step does not send the source file to a conversion server.

How do I make an image normal map less noisy?

Lower Strength first, then add a small amount of Blur and reduce Contrast. A clean input with even lighting usually improves the result more than aggressive sharpening.

Which normal map format should I download?

The tool exports a PNG, which is a practical lossless interchange format for most Blender, Unity, and Unreal workflows. Confirm the target engine import and compression settings before shipping.

Why does my image normal map look inside out?

The green channel direction may not match the renderer. Select the engine preset that matches your workflow or toggle Invert Y before exporting again.

Will a normal map add real geometry to my model?

No. A normal map changes how a surface responds to lighting. It does not add polygons, recover hidden depth, or fix perspective and baked lighting in the source image.
