What makes a good texture input?

Material textures work best when their brightness changes describe repeated surface relief rather than dramatic painted lighting.

  • Tileable wood, stone, fabric, brick, and metal textures

  • Even lighting helps preserve believable relief
  • Square or non-square textures are both supported

A generated normal map changes lighting response; it does not recover true geometry, remove baked shadows, or correct a perspective-heavy photograph. Validate the exported map in the target material and at the scale where it will be rendered.

Use these answers to choose a better source, engine direction, and export workflow for your material.

Is a texture normal map the same as a baked normal map?

No. This tool derives surface directions from luminance in a texture. A baked normal map usually comes from comparing high- and low-poly geometry, so it can encode more specific model detail.

Can I convert a seamless texture to a normal map?

Yes. A tileable source is a good fit because repeated luminance detail can be converted into repeated normal detail. Always inspect the edges in your target material to confirm the tile remains visually continuous.

What Strength should I use for a material texture?

Start near the default value and lower it when the surface looks inflated or noisy. The correct setting depends on the texture scale, mesh size, and lighting in the final scene.

Should a Unity or Unreal texture use Invert Y?

Use the preset that matches the tangent-space convention expected by your material. The Unity and Unreal presets in this tool select the DirectX-style green-channel direction.

Can I use the generated texture map in Blender?

Yes. Use the Blender preset, import the PNG as Non-Color data, and connect it through a Normal Map node in the material before connecting it to the Principled BSDF shader.
